Optimal Design of Small MIMO Smart Antenna Array for Handset Applications

Abstract:An eight-element MIMO smart antenna array operating in 3.3~3.5 GHz band for mo⁃
bile handset applications was proposed. The antenna array is composed of two symmetrical four-ele⁃
ment subarrays,which are arranged on the upper half along the two long sides of the mobile handset.
The total size of the four-element subarray is 45 mm×5 mm×3 mm,which is only one third of the
long side of the circuit board in length. Good isolations and envelope correlation coefficients are ob⁃
tained by introducing isolation slots between the elements to achieve the MIMO functions when the ar⁃
ray is used for receiving. Based on the method of maximum power transmission efficiency,the optimal distribution of excitations for the antenna array is obtained to beam the adiation energy to a desired di⁃rection with a maximum possible gain When antenna is used for transmitting. An in-house made beam ⁃forming controller is used to realize the optimal istribution of excitation to insure the antenna beam tobe directed to the desired direction. The realized antenna gains at 3.45 GHz in x and z directions are 4.1 dBi and 5.9 dBi respectively.
