Xue Yu, Professor, PhD Supervisor, IEEE Senior Member. My main research interests include evolutionary computation, deep learning, lightweight deep learning, lightweight large models, computer vision, and feature-map selection. I have led two General Programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), one collaborative project under a General NSFC Program, one NSFC Young Scientists Fund project, one Jiangsu Provincial Natural Science Foundation for Youth project, one Natural Science Research Project for Universities in Jiangsu Province, and four other provincial- or ministerial-level projects. In addition, I have participated in more than ten national or provincial-level research efforts.

I received the Second Prize of the Natural Science Award from the Chinese Association of Automation (where I was ranked third) and the Third Prize of the Provincial Natural Science Award (ranked second). To date, I have published over 100 academic papers in both domestic and international journals, accumulating more than 8,000 citations. I have been listed for several consecutive years among the top 2% of scientists globally. Two of my first-author papers were selected as ESI Hot Papers (top 0.1% worldwide), and seven were recognized as ESI Highly Cited Papers (top 1% worldwide). More than twenty of my co-authored papers have also been named ESI Highly Cited Papers.

I am currently recruiting PhD and master’s students in artificial intelligence—particularly in evolutionary computing, deep learning, lightweight deep learning, lightweight large models, computer vision, and feature-map selection. I can supervise students through both the School of Software and the School of Computer & Cyberspace Security. I welcome ambitious, diligent, and persistent learners who are dedicated to research in AI theory and applications. International PhD Opportunities I offer opportunities for doctoral studies at leading universities—University of Surrey (QS 2019 ranking: 140) via China Scholarship Council joint funding, Victoria University of Wellington (QS 2022 ranking: 194), University of Nottingham (QS Top 100), University of Tokyo (QS Top 25), Tokyo Institute of Technology (QS Top 60), RIKEN, University of Toyama, and University of South Australia.

My team is equipped with multiple high-performance GPUs (4090, 3090, 2080), and partner institutions provide access to over 50 additional GPUs, ensuring ample computing resources. Every graduate student from Year 1 to Year 3 receives basic research assistant funding. We cover publication fees, proofreading costs, and page charges for journals and conferences, and single-paper bonuses can reach up to RMB 5,000. I encourage students to explore industry employment in their third year without pressure to continue in academia before graduation. Through my guidance, students gain hands-on experience writing grant proposals and enjoy plentiful opportunities to interact directly with me. Conference participation (domestic or international) is also well supported financially.

Student Achievements Many of my students have earned national-level graduate scholarships (RMB 20,000), presidential scholarships (RMB 20,000), and the Puxin Elite Scholarship (RMB 10,000). Others have received second-class PhD scholarships (RMB 33,000/year), first-class outstanding master’s freshman scholarships (RMB 32,000/year), and tiered academic scholarships (first-class: RMB 18,000/year; second-class: RMB 14,000/year; third-class: RMB 8,000/year). Each year from 2020 to 2025, at least one student has secured a Jiangsu Province Graduate Innovation Project grant (RMB 15,000).

One of my graduate students secured full CSC funding in their third year to pursue a PhD at the University of Surrey, saving their family approximately RMB 1.6 million.

Han Xiaolong (Class of 2022): In 2024 he received RMB 83,000 in awards—National Scholarship (RMB 20,000), Presidential Scholarship (RMB 20,000), Puxin Elite Scholarship (RMB 10,000), First-class Academic Scholarship (RMB 18,000), and a Graduate Innovation Project grant (RMB 15,000). He also received advisor-supported awards totaling RMB 59,000 for papers, patents, projects, assistantships, conference support, publication fees, and patent application fees.

No student under my supervision has ever been forced to withdraw or take a leave of absence. Over a dozen cohorts have graduated successfully and on time. Most complete the graduation requirements by the second semester of their second year, allowing them to secure competitive positions in the fall recruitment season. The skills they acquire are directly applicable to real-world enterprise challenges, including project deployment and operational roles.
